Biography
Lauded by New York Concert Review as “In a word, superb,” Steinway Artist Rixiang Huang has captivated audiences across four continents with his magnetic performances. After winning top honors at the 12th Chopin International Piano Competition (Hartford) and the Los Angeles International Liszt Piano Competition in 2021, he quickly gained global recognition. A Naxos recording artist, his discography includes works by Scarlatti, Chopin, Liszt, and Beethoven. A decorated competitor, Dr. Huang has won prizes at the Paloma O’Shea, Hastings, Dallas, New York International Artists, La Palma d’Oro (Italy), and WPTA International Piano Competitions.
His 2024-25 season features a ten-city solo recital tour in Asia, a solo recital at The Richard Nixon Library, and performances with Portugal National Symphony (Prokofiev No. 3) and USC Thornton Orchestra (Rachmaninoff No. 3). He joins the artist faculty at Perugia Music Festival (Italy), Euro Arts Academy (Poland), The Piano Concerto Festival (Portugal), Paris International Music Academy (France), and Amici International Music Festival (California).
Huang has performed at major venues worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Universität Mozarteum (Austria), Palau de la Música Catalana (Spain), and China National Center for the Performing Arts. His performances have been broadcast by WQXR, KUSC, KDFC, Classic
FM, and Corporación de Radio y Televisión Española. As a soloist, he has appeared with leading orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (London), China National Symphony, Indonesia National Symphony, Portuguese Philharmonic, Florence Philharmonic, and Chautauqua Symphony, working with renowned conductors including Carl St. Clair, Jac Van Steen, and Maurizio Colasanti. He has participated in masterclasses with Sergei Babayan, Stephen Hough, Arie Vardi, and Dang Thai Son.
Huang is represented by Naxos Classical Management.Dr. Huang is the Founder and CEO of Empire Music Academy (California) and Founder/Artistic Director of Pacific Stars International Piano Competition & Festival. His students have won prizes at international competitions such as the Los Angeles Liszt, Seattle International, Bradshaw & Buono, WPTA, and American Protégé. A sought-after adjudicator, he has judged competitions including MTNA Young Artist Piano Competition, MTAC Piano Competition, Paderewski International, and SYMF. He is a member of MTNA, MTAC, and CAPMT.
Dr. Huang earned his Doctor of Musical Arts at USC Thornton School of Music under Jeffrey Kahane and Ick Choo Moon. He holds a Master of Music from Juilliard (studying with Jerome Lowenthal and Matti Raekallio) and trained at the Cleveland Institute of Music under Antonio Pompa-Baldi and Paul Schenly, receiving the Arthur Loesser Memorial Prize for outstanding piano performance.
